”Virtuoso music played with flair and a striking looseness. Despite many fast notes, the grooves continue to breathe.”
Keyboardist Matthijs Geerts is a much sought-after session musician. He steps into the spotlight with the Matthijs Geerts Group and the debut album ‘Lost In Reverse’ (2021). His music connects acoustic and electronic worlds. That helps him to create contemporary jazz in its most hybrid form. During the pandemic, he had time to work on his own material. He sent demos to some old friends of Codarts. In the rehearsals, the music was further shaped. This resulted in deep harmonic structures and nuanced sound textures. Virtuoso music played with flair and a striking looseness. Despite many fast notes, the grooves continue to breathe. Roland Huguenin

Between the photos of the Cuban photographer Alberto Diaz Gutiérrez, better known as Korda, a performance by the Matthijs Geerts Group in the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen. Keyboardist and composer Matthijs Geerts plays with Thomas Pol on bass, Itai Weissman on EWI and Davy Andy Henket on drums. After many years of working as a session musician, now was the time to release his own record. In 2021 he released ‘Lost in Reverse’. He describes his music as: “a new template to connect the acoustic and electronic worlds. It is contemporary jazz in its most hybrid form.” Geerts plays three layered pieces from his new album with his group. Geerts: “Every composition has its own story to tell. Sometimes we call it energy, energy that we translate into music through composition and improvisation.”
Yesterday I’ve had a lot of fun playing with Joao Driessen, Johannes Fend and Davy Henket.

Vrije Geluiden (VPRO) asked me to play a TV recording at the Cobra Museum, Amstelveen.

Jazzflits Review “…The alternation of fat grooves, odd time signatures, atmospheric parts and beautiful solos by all musicians makes this a very interesting CD. (…) Very worthwhile!…”

IO Pages Review ‘’…This CD consists of seven wonderful produced dynamic compositions where Geerts acoustic piano, surprising synthesizer sounds and intriguing electronics combines with virtuoso playing. In terms of style we have to think about a modern version of The Chick Corea Elektric Band…’’
